Help young people become more financially literate! Volunteer for New Branch Outreach Opportunity by Gloria Yost

financial literacyThis coming year, the Sacramento Branch plans to partner with the SCHOOLS Financial Credit Union to assist with presentations to area high school students on an interactive financial literacy program entitled “Bite of Reality.”

In the simulation teens are given a fictional occupation, salary, spouse and family, student loan debt, credit card debt, and medical insurance payments. The teens then walk around to various table-top stations (us) to “purchase” housing, transportation, food, clothing, household necessities, day care, and other needs. Fortunately, the game also includes a “credit union” to help with their financial needs.

This interactive activity will teach teens how to make financial decisions and give them a better understanding of the challenges of living on a budget. Teens will have to deal with a pushy “car salesperson” and a commission-based “realtor,” and weigh their wants versus their needs. There’s even a “Fickle Finger of Fate” that will give some of the students unexpected “expenses” or “windfalls” – just like in real life.

We are beginning to gather volunteer names so we’ll be ready when SCHOOLS contacts in August/September with specific dates and places.

We have a chance to preview a PowerPoint version of the financial literacy simulation program, Mad City Money, which SAFE Credit Union plans to present to local schools next year. Financial Literacy for Girls by Linda Whitney & Gloria Yosts

Consider these questions:

  1. Is it important to learn how to make a budget?
  2. Should I know how to use a debit card?
  3. How much should I spend on housing and utilities?
  4. Can I still spend some money on entertainment and fun?
  5. How much do children cost?
  6. What should I budget for food?

The above questions and many more are addressed in a wonderful financial literacy program presented to high school students by SAFE Credit Union (SCHOOLS and Golden 1 have similar programs). SAFE Credit Union has also made very successful presentations to Tech Trek girls at UC Davis.

AAUW has been very interested in programs that help girls make decisions regarding how to use money wisely. Now, we have a chance to help support financial literacy programs. Both SAFE Credit Union and SCHOOLS Credit Union are in need of volunteers to help them implement their programs in area high schools. Five of our branch members will be helping with a presentation in early April. There is a need for more volunteers. Are YOU interested in helping? If so, please contact Linda Whitney at 916-421-0341 or lnlwhitney@sbcglobal.net or Gloria Yost at 916-961-3306 or gloriayost@aol.com.
