AAUW Funds / Legacy Circle

AAUW Funds & Legacy Circle By Charmen Goehring

October was a month full of AAUW Funds activities. Members in California enjoyed two online Funds events, previously the Funds Luncheons, each of which highlighted nine CA-based recipients of AAUW grants and fellowships. Their topics of study were diverse and fascinating!

While many missed the in-person opportunity to see friends and meet the recipients, dozens of

members who might not otherwise have attended a lunch in the past were able to participate on Zoom. It is always inspiring to see how our contributions have provided support for these young women, some of whom might change the world!

About a dozen AAUW Sacramento members answered the call to make a special donation to the Greatest Needs Fund prior to the Funds events and in appreciation, I delivered homemade scones and jam to the contributors to enjoy while they watched the Oct. 10 speakers. Thanks to these women, and all the previous donations our generous members have made this past fiscal year, we have made our 5 Star Branch goal of a minimum of $30 per member. Thank you for supporting AAUW and our mission of equity for women and girls!!

We have just a few weeks left for the California Is In It To Win It Legacy Circle contest! The branch that adds the most new Legacy Circle members during the contest period will win a special Zoom session with AAUW Development Director Heather Miller, AAUW CA State President Dianne Owens, AAUW CA Funds Chair Judy Cavin Brown and other possible special guests.

The Legacy Circle is composed of dedicated AAUW members who have included AAUW in their estates in order to ensure the organization is healthy and able to help women and girls far into the future. If you have been a member of AAUW for 30 years or more, you are passionate about AAUW. Why not take the simple step of joining the Legacy Circle? You can join online at www.aauw.org or contact me for a brochure.

AAUW Sacramento member Hedda Smithson recently made the decision to commit to supporting AAUW by joining the esteemed group. She joins Marty McKnew, Kathy Asay, Alicia Hetman, and me. I look forward to awarding more AAUW Sacramento members with their special Legacy Circle Pin!

California Is In It To Win It! Legacy Circle Contest by Charmen Goehring

The competition is on to increase the number of Legacy Circle members in our branch. This statewide contest will end in November and members of the winning branch will be invited to a special Virtual celebration with AAUW CA President Dianne Owens, AAUW CA Funds Chair Judy Cavin Brown, AAUW Director of Development Heather Miller and maybe other special guests. The winning branch will also be closer to completing its Funds Star in the 5 Star program and receive a special banner to display at meetings, virtual or in person.

The Legacy Circle is a special group of members who have made plans to include AAUW in their estate planning. There are numerous ways to do this from making AAUW the beneficiary or part beneficiary on an insurance policy or 401K to creating a charitable gift annuity. Becoming a member is easy and takes less than five minutes online. Or, you can download and mail in a form. AAUW does not require you to designate an amount, all that is needed now is your commitment.

We look forward to expanding the Legacy Circle and the special recognition each member receives for their commitment to equity for all women and girls. Join us! Questions? Contact Charmen Goehring (charminme@yahoo.com or 207-756-0406), Northern CA Legacy Circle Liaison.

Funds Tea for One Coming Soon! by Charmen Goehring

This year, thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic and most programming moving to Zoom, the annual State Funds luncheons in October will be held on the virtual platform. This means that more of us will be able to “attend” and hear the inspiring women in California who have received AAUW fellowships and grants.

It also provided me with inspiration for a unique branch fundraising opportunity. Normally, the funds luncheon costs $45 and a drive to the Bay Area. This year, in lieu of listening to speakers over lunch, I am offering to deliver Tea for One to your home in time for the presentation on October 10!

For a $25 minimum donation to the Greatest Needs Fund, I will bring homemade scones and jam with a tea bag or two to your home on the morning of October 10. Enjoy your treats while listening to our fellows during the 1pm event on Zoom. You will also be helping our branch reach 5 Star Status!

You can mail a check to our CFO, Liz Jordan, with Tea for One/Greatest Needs in the memo line, or make your donation online at aauw.org and email Charmen Goehring to let me know. The sooner you donate, the easier my planning will be.

Thank you for supporting AAUW Funds, especially the Greatest Needs.

Fund News by Kathleen Asay and Merrie McLaughlin

In 2018, AAUW created a Strategic Plan for the current and future operation of our organization. We’re hoping you are becoming familiar with the five new funds that grew out of that plan but, if not, here’s a review. As you will see, the funds of the past have been absorbed into these, the funds of the future.

The first and most vital fund is the Greatest Needs Fund #9110 because as it states it can be used where needed, even to support programs administered through other funds. By enabling AAUW to respond quickly to societal change and opportunities for action, it ensures our participation in the effort to provide equity to women and girls.

The next three funds are Education and Training #4450, Economic Security #4449 and Leadership #4452. These funds are more specific in their goals and funding targets. Education and Training supports public policy, fellowships and grants, and research to see that all levels of education are free from sex discrimination. Economic Security #4449 includes pay equity, Title VII and retirement security through Start Smart, Work Smart and the Legal Advocacy Fund. Leadership #4452 seeks to develop women leaders so that the concerns of women and girls will be considered in training and careers. NCCWSL is a Leadership program at the national level. (At the branch level, funds for college students to attend the national conference are raised locally.)

The fifth fund is Governance and Sustainability #4451 which is designed to support the operation of AAUW, using modern technology and communications to expand and create a vital and diverse outreach.

These are big goals. Important goals. If you have any questions about these goals and the funds that support them, contact us.

Finally, some of you may remember that in September 2018 you were told in this space about Cecilia Payne who received an AAUW fellowship in 1924 to complete her PhD. in astronomy at Harvard. Payne received Harvard’s first PhD in astronomy and went on to become the first female department head at the university. Her work in studying the stars is still recognized for its importance to the field. A biography of Payne has just been published if you’re interested in learning more about this brilliant woman: What Stars Are Made Of by Donovan Moore.

If you used the Save Mart Shares card to generate money for our branch programs you know it is no more.  In its place Save Mart contracted with e-Scrip, and e-Scrip does not issue cards.  Instead you need to sign up online, registering a telephone number and then enter that number when checking out at Save Mart or FoodMaxx.  The steps for registering are:

  1. Go to: http://www.escrip.com
  2. On the screen that comes up click on the “sign up” button, left side of the screen where is says “Make a Difference.”
  3. The next screen (Sign Up. It’s Free.) asks for your zip code, once entered, it asks you to create an account.
  4. Enter your name, email address, telephone number and create a password for e-Scrip.
  5. On this screen, select your charity. Type in: American Association University Women (no OF).  The choice should pop up with a 1361 Vallejo Way address – click on that one.
    1. Now comes the screen where you enter the phone number you will use at check out.
    2. You also have the option to enter the credit or debit card you use for shopping.  This will give our branch money from other vendors, including some restaurants
  6. Review your information and click “sign up.”
  7. You are done! I did not enter credit or debit cards so the screen gave me the option of adding them at this point, as well as other ways to use the site to generate more money for our branch.

Join AAUW for “The Unsinkable Molly Brown” on March 15 & Help Support Our Branch Programs

Are you looking for an entertaining way to spend a wintery Sunday afternoon?

unsinkable.mollyWell, we have the answer: Come and bring your friends and family to see “The Unsinkable Molly Brown,” the lively musical of stage and screen fame featuring the adventures of that unique, spirited woman of the old west, Molly Brown. Runaway Stage is presenting this stage production, and we will have the entire house at the matinee performance on Sunday, March 15, at 2 p.m. at the Sierra 2 Center, 2791 24th St. A wine and cheese reception during intermission is included in your ticket price. Tickets are $35 per person, $20 of which is tax-deductible.

This will be our major fundraising event for the AAUW Sacramento 2014-15 program year, so it’s critical that we sell as many tickets as possible.

As you may recall, three years ago we had a theatre party with Runaway Stage for a performance of a musical version of “Legally Blond,” and everyone enjoyed the event, so we are doing it again with this new production. Proceeds will benefit our local Scholarships, Tech Trek and Speech Trek projects, plus our national Funds programs.

As already stated, we need to sell this performance out in order to raise as much money as possible for our local programs. We encourage you to invite your family and friends to come, too. You can purchase tickets either by sending in the flier found here with your check or purchase tickets online using the Eventbrite program (click on the orange button below). This time we won’t be holding a silent auction or selling raffle tickets, so you will not be asked to pay for anything else beyond the tickets.

We hope to see you there!
