President’s Message

President’s Message By Nancy McCabe

Welcome Spring! A couple of activities to note this past March:

AAUW Sacramento Branch was well represented at Sacramento County’s Inaugural Women and Girls Festival on March 9. This was the first time in Sacramento that so many people have gathered to celebrate women and girls at a festival organized by women, with women, for women. Mahnaz Khazari, Jan Stuter, Terry Chekon and I hosted an AAUW table at Sac City College. It was also a learning experience that we need a more dynamic presentation to engage passersby, with interesting handouts and perhaps a spinning wheel with prizes.

You can see highlights of the event in these <photos>.

On March 16, the AAUW California Gov Trek Committee hosted the 2024 Gov Trek Finale! Here are the results:

The student campaign team that won the highly contested 2024 Gov Trek mock election competition: Team Vote Eliana. This team includes four high school girls from San Ramon, two from Roseville-South, and one from Santa Cruz County. Congratulations to the members of those branch communities and these up-and-coming leaders! The team members will receive internships and awards.

Tech Trek/Gov Trek

Tech Trek Has Trekers!! By Lori Franz

Thanks to the diligent work of our wonderful Tech Trek committee recruiters, Gloria Yost and Kathleen Deaver, the applications for the July UC-Davis camp are starting to arrive.  Gloria and Kathleen have done a great job with contacting principals and teachers, and working with parents to produce completed applications for another quality class of young women with interests in STEM fields.

We have all had to learn the new application and tracking software, CampDoc, and adapt as we have the fun of being first-time users of a newly developed system. Chair Mary Miller has diligently interacted with the state coordinators to keep our process and data responsibilities moving forward.  We are excited to be able to meet the applicants soon.

For those members who would like some limited, but very fun, interaction with the camps and campers, we have been asked to recruit some volunteers to help out during the Davis camp week. Please consider!!

Men still vastly outnumber women in the halls of power. Let’s close that gender gap! The Gov Trek launch webinar was held on Nov.16 and you can find the details at https://www.aauw-ca.org/introducing-gov-trek/

AAUW branches can offer the new, free, virtual statewide program developed by AAUW California for high school girls in their junior and senior years. The purpose is to expose them to careers in public service and elected office. Starting in January and conducted through five virtual two-hour sessions, the activities will be engaging, interactive and inspirational. See how your branch can participate!

Gov Trek 2023 Volunteers Needed! You can volunteer to help with one, or more, of the five two-hour sessions. Click here for the Volunteer Training and more details about the job. HERE
