The Official Take Back the Night Icon

The Official Take Back the Night Icon

The AAUW Sacramento branch will again co-sponsor the Women Take Back the Night Rally and March to end violence against women around the world. Women Take Back the Night is an international feminist tradition of marches and rallies that have been organized around the world for nearly forty years.

This year marks Sacramento’s thirty-sixth annual Take Back the Night and the second year that our branch has participated.

Please join us on Second Saturday, October 10, 2015 at the Native American Health Center at 2020 J Street in downtown Sacramento.

  • We will staff a table at the resource fair to share with the community what AAUW does to advocate for women and girls and actually participate in the march about 8 p.m.
  • . The rally is a celebration of activism to end all forms of violence and oppression against women and children.

Break out those walking shoes and join us in a march. You will be glad you did!

Speech Trek Plans for 9th Annual Contest by Shari Beck

Speech TrekOur Speech Trek Committee has met and is planning for the 2016 Speech Contest. The contest is planned for February 20, 2016.  Students compete for four cash prizes from $50-$400.

High School students in the Elk Grove Unified School District are invited to speak for 5-6 minutes in a prepared extemporaneous speech.

This year’s topic:  What is gender bias and inequality? What is its impact on people? Why should organizations such as AAUW continue to work to change its practice?

Speech Trek is an AAUW CA Project that is provided by local branches to high school students. The branches send a video DVD of their student winner’s speech to the AAUW CA Speech Trek Co-coordinator who convenes a panel of judges to select the top five speeches.  The top three student speakers are invited to give their speeches before the AAUW Annual Meeting, held next year in April 2016.  Students competing in the statewide competition are eligible to win prizes from $150 – $1500.

The contest is named after a Roseville branch member, Eleanor Stem Allen, whose family makes a large annual memorial donation in her honor.  If you are interested in making a donation or in joining the committee’s efforts for the contest, please contact Shari Beck, gsbeck@surewest.net /916-451-5143, or Liz Jordan, lizjord@msn.com / 916-354-9608.
