AAUW and Public Policy by Inger Lindholm

What Public Policy Is (and means to AAUW Members)

What Public Policy Is (and means to AAUW Members)

Policy

A definition states policy is “a set of ideas or a plan for action followed by a business, a government, a political party or a group of people.”

Organization

A definition states organization is “a group whose members work together for a shared purpose in a continuing way.”

Or as stated simply by AAUW, It is who we are and what we do. In other words, policy not only identifies us as a group with a plan, but it identifies the action.

This year I invite members to be aware of the opportunities for action not only in AAUW, but in your community as well. This can be overwhelming, so I encourage you to attach yourself to one or two and follow it. As the Policy committee leader, I will be discussing one issue at a time in a concise way, and perhaps you will be attracted to following up on your own. I will do this through our newsletter and at meetings. Two interested members, Nancy Shipman and Jessica Arauza, will be coming on board with me. Thanks for being a part of AAUW.

Your Public Policy Director,

Inger Lindholm

Jane Cooley brings Sunshine to AAUW by Nancy McCabe

Jane Cooley is a past president of our branch and the current Sunshine chairperson. She received her BA in business from California State University, Sacramento while caring for her five children and working in an insurance office. This was a bit of a departure from her former Air Force career, where she was the only woman in the weather reconnaissance group at McClellan and Malestrom Air Force Bases. Her husband’s Air Force career took them to England, Seattle, and mostly Texas.

Jane’s favorite AAUW experience was attending national conferences and feeling the electricity of intelligent women interacting. She has been public policy chair, secretary, president, and currently sunshine chair in the Concord and Sacramento branches. She currently participates in Healthy Heart Dinner group, Great Decisions, and a book group.

Jane’s current mission in AAUW is sending cards to members and their spouses who are sick or to the families when our members die. She can’t do this without your help, as she doesn’t know every one of our members. Please either call her at (916) 483-0302 or email her at Janecooley1@gmail.com so we can let our membership know that we care. We appreciate Jane and you — our members — for keeping her informed.
