Membership Update-New 50-Year Members, Renewal Time and Summer Birthdays

Membership Update By Donna Holmes and Marty McKnew

At our May 20 branch meeting, it was our pleasure to recognize our new 50-year members.  In alphabetical order:

Jean Bonar joined July 1, 1973 in Santa Monica, California where she remained until 1979, when she moved to the Reno, Nevada branch. The moves continued with Jean arriving in Sacramento in 1985.  Along the way, she became a paid life member so if she landed somewhere without a branch, she was still a National member. Jean is also a past-president, serving in 1991-92.

Patricia Peck joined July 1, 1973 and also purchased a life membership.  I was unable to reach Patricia, so all I know is she has a BA and MA in math and math/education.

Hedda Smithson also joined July 1, 1973 and still lives in the same house.  Besides being a biology teacher, she has held numerous positions in the branch and is our incoming program vice-president with Barbara Smith. She is also a past president three times over: 1985-86, 1992-94 and 2004-06.  Lastly, another paid life member!

To become a paid life member requires paying 20 years of National dues, which is all tax deductible the year of purchase.

Having secured 10 new members via the Shape the Future program, we were awarded three free National members for the 2023-24 year.  We chose three longtime members who have consistently given to our branch in many ways: Jane Cooley, Cherril Peabody and Mary Williams.  Thank you for all you do!

Annual Renewal

Don’t forget: It’s time to renew!

Note:  National dues increased by $5 to $72 per year, no change for State ($20) or our Branch ($20), new total is $112 of which $89 is tax deductible.

You may pay online with a credit card by clicking on this link: <Renew> and enter your email and password.

If you paid by check last year, you should have received, by the end of April, a renewal form, return envelope and green sheet showing what is tax deductible.  Please respond quickly and take this opportunity to provide needed updates your directory information.

Ever wonder about the women supported by AAUW National?  Here is a great way to see our history and brighten your day:

Since 1881, AAUW members, fellows and awardees have made pioneering advances in virtually every field. Check out our “Faces of AAUW” online gallery of trailblazing women, which includes Marie Curie, the first woman to win a Nobel Prize in 1903; Shirley Chisholm, the first Black woman elected to Congress in 1969; current Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor; and so many more. It’s the perfect way to reflect and remember AAUW’s world-changing impact this Women’s History Month!

Member Recognition

One of our members, Ann Arneill, PhD, was recently recognized by the Sacramento County
Board of Supervisors for more than 30 years of service as a champion for behavioral health.
Ann served as executive officer for the California Council of Mental Health from 1985 to 1993
and the California Mental Health Planning Council from 1993 to 2011. These organizations were
established in state law to advise the California Legislature and state government on mental
health issues. During this time, she was a significant contributor to the evolution of mental
health in the State of California.

Dr. Arneill received a doctor of philosophy degree in psychology from UC Davis in 2004 to help
with her work in the field of behavioral health. In addition, Ann served on the Sacramento
County Mental Health Board from 2015 to 2022 and as chair from 2019 to 2020.

Congratulations, Ann! We are very proud of you and your contributions.

Membership Update and Renewals

Membership Update for May By Donna Holmes and Marty McKnew

We have two new members: Joy Clous and Mahnaz Khazari!  They don’t know each other, yet, but both want to join Great Decisions III.  We are hoping they will attend our May 21st IN PERSON meeting.  Look for more details in the May program article.

Additionally, we have three new 50-Year Members: Mary Lou Lentz, Linda Sparks and Sue Whetstone.  They will be presented with their certificates at our May meeting.  Although Sue may not be up to attending, we are asking her daughter to come and receive her mother’s certificate.

Renewals:

The new National software, called Nimble, is still being rolled out and has a few issues that are being worked on.  Per our National contact, Angie Cooper, indicates that more renewal information will be coming out soon.  The new National dues are $67 of which $64 is tax deductible. A number of the Board members have used the new renewal process successfully.

If you want to renew now, go to AAUW.org and then to Membership.  In the upper right-hand corner of the screen, click on the ‘login’ button. The first time you log in, you’ll need to reset your password by clicking the “Forgot Password” link. From there you will be directed to your “Personal Snapshot”. Do try it. Click HERE for instructions and several tutorials on how to set up your Personal Snapshot, the new term for your personal AAUW portal. (As a current member, you don’t need to be concerned about the information in the video on how to add new members.)

Once you are logged in you will land on your personal page, which has your personal information such as email address, home address and phone, in addition to your current membership information. At the bottom of the page you will see a blue ‘RENEW’ button.  When you click on it you will enter the renewal process.  Your branch and state membership are not automatic. On the branch page you will need to scroll to CA 0092, that is the Sacramento Branch ID, and click it.  On the next page you pick your state, click on CA for California.  Scroll to the bottom (every branch and every state are listed on these pages!) and submit.  At this point you may pay by credit card or directly from your bank account.  You will be given the option to make a National Fund donation.  Or, you may mail me a check.  We will be mailing paper renewals to members not completing online.

If you are an Honorary Life Member you still need to renew but no money needs to be paid and we can do those in bulk.

Look for e-blasts to follow with renewal information – thank you.

Membership Renewals and Donations

Membership Renewals and Donations By Sharon Anderson and Liz Jordan

Sharon Anderson, membership treasurer, and Liz Jordan, finance director, want to thank the members who have so eagerly renewed their membership and made significant donations to our branch outreach programs, and to our Dues Assistance Fund and General Branch Operations Fund.

As of the date of this writing, May 15, 2021:

  • 107 branch members have renewed membership on time. Thank You!
  • 49 renewing members used the convenience of online renewal. Last year, at the end of renewal season, a total of 41 members used the national Membership Payment Program (MPP). Conclusion: we are already more efficient this year, in mid-season than we were last year at the end of the renewal season.  This saves hours of branch volunteer time. Good Job!
  • Members have generously donated $7,006 to our local branch activities!
  • Many of our 50-Year, Honorary Life members (MBHL) who do not have to pay branch dues, faithfully send in their $20. We are so appreciative.

The deadline to renew is June 1. Because our newsletter comes out very close to this deadline, we urge every member:

  • If you have not yet renewed, do so as quickly as possible.
  • Whether renewing online or by check and snail mail, all members should return their Renewal Form to Sharon Anderson to update contact information. Did you find that conveniently addressed envelope?  If you can’t find it, Sharon’s address is in the directory.  Her contact info is 916-396-9790; aauw@att.net.

The renewal process requires many hours of volunteer time:

  1. Making trips to the bank to deposit checks.
  2. Updating membership and bank records (lots of data processing).
  3. Notifying Interest Groups and branch committees of members who have indicated an interest in their area of responsibility
  4. Calculating next year’s branch budget, which is based on dues collected.
  5. Updating and preparing the branch directory starting July 1
  6. Printing and mailing the directory to the membership in early August.

Sharon Anderson and Liz Jordan want to thank all members for their timely renewal and for the generosity of their donations to local and national needs. Thank you!

AAUW Membership Renewal

AAUW Membership Renewal By Sharon Anderson

The branch renewal letters went out in the mail on Monday, April 19. The day before that, I sent out, to all our members, a mass email that includes National’s invoice form. If you will use National’s emailed invoice form to renew this year, to that we say: Yippee!  It saves us a lot of time and trouble, getting all the dues in the right slot very quickly.

The invoice was mailed out from my computer, but it doesn’t look like it because I have to use National’s program. The email will be from memberinfo@AAUW.org.

National’s email invoice is easy, as you no doubt learned last year, but here’s a refresher, just in case:  1) open the email with your credit/debit card in hand; 2) click on the blue (aqua?) highlighted option 1: “Click here to use debit or credit card”; 3) fill in the blanks; 4) click “next”; 5) click the “submit” button at the end.  Besides dues, you can also donate to any of National’s Funds on this invoice.

For any donations that you wish to make to any of Sacramento’s programs with your renewal, please include a check mailed with your renewal form, because National will not process our branch donations.

If you have any problems, please call me. Please be sure to postal mail back your paper application to me, as we do need it for our bookkeeping purposes. If the emailed invoice gets lost in your inbox, just let me know and I’ll send you another one.

If you haven’t renewed as you read this, renew now! Thank you!

Membership Matters by Linda Patterson and Sharon Norris

Remembrances

Longtime former AAUW member Dorothy Dublirer passed away in December 2017 at the age of 99. Dorothy was born in Anchorage, Alaska, and attended the University of Alaska, Washington State University, and Sacramento State University, earning teaching and school psychologist credentials. She worked as a nurse’s aid during World War II in San Francisco and moved to Sacramento after the war ended with her first husband. After earning her Master’s Degree, she taught Early Childhood Education at UCLA before again returning to Sacramento, where she worked for the California Department of Education for many years. In her long career, she established preschool education programs for migrant children and volunteered with the Developmental Disabilities Service Organization. One of Dorothy’s many community contributions was the design of the Crooked Mile and the Swiss Cheese Wedge at Fairytale Town in Land Park.

Membership News

Please welcome new members Cecilia Delury, Maria Barajas, Vivian Khen and returning member Kathy Schrumpf, who have joined in the last two months.

At the May Branch meeting, members will be encouraged to meet and sit with other members living in the same zip code to facilitate getting to know one another. Look for these new members and others you don’t know at that meeting and be sure to say hello and welcome them to the Branch. Building and retaining our membership is everyone’s responsibility.

Look for your membership renewal forms in the mail in early May. AAUW National has raised member dues to $59 from $49, effective March 16. Annual membership for National, State and .Branch dues will now be $99.

Attend Authors Lunch and Participate in Voluntary Early AAUW Membership Renewal by Gloria Yost & Sharon Anderson

WHAT:                     AAUW Sacramento branch authors luncheon.

WHEN:                    Saturday, April 11, 11:30 a.m.

WHERE:                 Plates Café & Catering, 14 Business Park Way, Sacramento, 95828.

The reservation form is now available here for the 2015 AAUW Sacramento branch’s authors luncheon.  Please get your reservations in early.  Let’s see which book group gets the highest percentage of members attending.  You can also register using online using Eventbrite. Click the orange button below:

Eventbrite - AAUW Sacramento Author's Luncheon

Local author, Karen Levy, will discuss her memoir, My Father’s Gardens. She will be selling copies that day.  It is available at The Avid Reader in Davis and at Avid Reader Tower, as well as Barnes & Noble, Amazon, Kindle, Kobo, Nook, and through Homebound Publications.

While you enjoy this year’s authors luncheon, take a few minutes to renew your AAUW membership. Early membership renewal offers members an opportunity to complete their forms and submit payment all at one time. A special table will be set up with the renewal forms.

Please remember that the total renewal fee is now $85, up because of a $4 increase in the State’s portion of our fee. AAUW California has increased its fee for membership from $16 to $20. The increase was proposed by the AAUW CA and voted on and passed by the voting State members. Therefore, when you receive your renewal application from us in April, you will see a total fee of $85 for National, State, and the Sacramento Branch. For more information, search for “fees” on the State website: www.aauw-ca.org.

This is the first state fee increase since 2004. AAUW CA has reduced costs in many ways, such as finding less expensive office space and holding some Board meetings by phone rather than in person. However, costs continue to rise while income from investments and membership has fallen.

If you have questions about membership renewal, please call Sharon Anderson at (916) 594-7650 or email her at anderson.aauw@att.net.
