Tuesday, October 10, 2017
Community Room #1 of the Student Center
American River College,

Showings at 1 and 6 p.m.

In AAUW, we established a mission statement that says we stand for gender equity, for breaking down barriers, for opportunities for girls and women to live and work as equals with boys and men.

On Tuesday, Oct. 10, AAUW Sacramento Branch is teaming up with our sister affiliate, Citrus Heights/American River (CHAR) to provide two free showings of a documentary film that looks hard at “how women are treated in the United States today” presenting the “compelling and persuasive argument for the urgency of ratifying the Equal Rights Amendment.” (equalmeansequal.com/synopsis)

Equal Means Equal (2016), a 93-minute film documentary written and directed by Kamala Lopez, will be shown at American River College, Oct. 10 at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. Our two branches have reserved the Student Center Community Rooms #1-4 for both showings. Parking Lot A off Myrtle Avenue is the closest lot to the Student Center that is not under construction, and everyone (the public, members, with or without handicap placard) must pay the $2 fee at the Pay Station.

All AAUW members are invited along with students and faculty of ARC and the general public. A brief Question and Answer period will follow each showing. Food and drink is available for purchase in the Student Center and permitted in the Community Room.

Presidents’ Message by Co-Presidents Donna Holmes and Marty McKnew

Donna Holmes

Our Showcase was a great kick-off to our branch year! Thank you so much to Cherril Peabody for taking charge of this program and doing an outstanding job. Thanks also go to the best supporting team: Gloria Yost, Barbara Smith, Sharon Norris, Nancy McCabe and Liz Jordan, plus my husband, Wyndel.

This year’s program proved to be another tour du force with 78 people in attendance. Jo Reiken and Morgan Glover brought in our Tech Trek girls with their families to share their experiences for the first time in several years. Tech Trek is one of the most beloved things our branch does, and the Showcase presentation was just what our membership wants.

Three of our four scholarship winners were also present with family members and spoke of their dreams and goals and showed gratitude for what we have given them. Thank you to Susana

Marty McKnew

Mullen and Anna Storey for making this happen, with extra thanks to Susana for her presentation.

Kathy Asay, our new Funds Director, arranged for a former Fellow to speak on how getting an AAUW Fellowship changed her life. The fellow, Marjorie Wade, is a current branch member.

We’re looking forward to two upcoming events in October: Equal Means Equal presentations at American River College on Oct. 10 with the CHAR branch and Take Back the Night on Oct. 14. Hope to see many of you there!

Membership Matters by Membership Co-Directors Linda Patterson and Sharon Norris

Membership, joined by longtime member Marjorie Wade, held our first new member coffee in September, welcoming two new members and introducing two new prospective members to our Branch and programs.

Please join us in welcoming new members Leitha Wyant and Kathleen Olson.

Leitha, whose professional background was in finance, grew up in the Sacramento area and has just returned after many years living on the East Coast. She resides in Rancho Cordova and is looking forward to becoming involved in our Branch’s many activities.

Kathleen was a professor of Spanish literature at the University of Oklahoma before retiring and is a former member of the Georgia Branch of AAUW. She currently volunteers at the Crocker Art Museum and was introduced to the Branch by Nancy Nolen-Swanson.

Public Policy Update by Ashley Anglesey

Our New Public Policy Director Ashley Anglesey

Hello AAUW Sacramento Branch Members!

My name is Ashley Anglesey, and I am the new Director of Public Policy. I am 28 years old and just graduated Magna Cum Laude from California State University, Sacramento, with my Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. During my undergrad, I held many leadership positions on campus (including serving as an officer in AAUW’s Chapter) and was a research assistant in two psychology labs. I also held an internship at the California Commission on the Status of Women and Girls, where I served as a public policy researcher. I’m now studying for the LSAT and will be applying to law schools for fall 2018 admission, where I hope to specialize in Employment & Labor Law.

I’m excited to start working in this branch and bring my enthusiasm, dedication, and love for advocacy and public policy to this organization. I look forward to increasing awareness for AAUW’s public policy priorities in our communities, specifically issues involving civil rights, education, economic security, and Title IX. Our first event was for National Voter Registration Day on Sept. 26, where we teamed up with Sac State’s Chapter to host a tabling and social media campaign to reach potential voters.

I hope this is just the beginning to a fun, advocacy-centered year! And I look forward to getting to know all of you better

Funds Update by Funds Director Kathleen L. Asay

When we talk about AAUW Funds, we have much to celebrate. Since 1888, AAUW has provided support to 12,000 women and research and community projects, representing all 50 states and 140 countries. Many of those women and projects are here in California. This month, California AAUW will celebrate with three luncheons across the state where members can meet the women and discover the exciting work being done here with our support. Six to eight of our outstanding recent recipients will attend each luncheon, present an overview of their work, and give a personal account of what AAUW’s support has meant to them.

Two luncheons will be held in Northern California:

  • Oct. 28 in South San Francisco
  • Oct. 29 in Danville.

The cost is $45. To attend in South San Francisco, go to https://southsanfranfundluncheon.eventbrite.com. For the Danville luncheon, see https://eastbayfundluncheon.eventbrite.com. The deadline for reservations is Oct. 16. If you decide to go, please email me at klawriter@surewest.net so I can arrange carpools. You may also want to take notes so you can report back what you learned!

AAUW Sacramento 2017 Showcase Recap by Cherril Peabody

The Showcase meeting on September 23rd was very well attended (see the photo), but there was so much to see, hear and do that not very many members signed up for new interest groups. The following groups will still welcome new members: Art & Architecture, Board Games (Day and Evening groups), Film Fans, Great Decisions III, Readers Theater, Scrabble Just for Fun, Singles Dining Out and Travel. Couples Dining Out can take one more couple and both bridge groups will welcome substitutes. You can check out the Interest Groups Meeting Schedule in Capital Ideas for days and times the groups regularly meet.

We have had a few people sign up for two new proposed interest groups: Political Action and Chamber Music (attendance at concerts), but we need at least as few more prospective members for each and we especially need members who are willing to chair these groups. The new groups would have to be approved by the board, but they won’t be presented until sufficient membership and leadership has been established. The meeting day and time for each group is to be determined. For more information about the proposed groups contact Cherril Peabody at capeabody@comcast.net.

Some book groups also are accepting new members. For information about book groups see the book group schedule in Capital Ideas and contact Linda Cook at lindacook5833@comcast.net.
