Our Sac State Interns Have Been Busy! By Liz Jordan and Gloria Yost

As previously noted, our Sacramento Branch board voted to create a new
outreach program to provide internships in cooperation with CSUS Sociology Professor, Lina
Rincon. The semester long internships began in January with students, Renee Walters and
Alexis Perrott, doing research to learn about AAUW, and steps needed to successfully establish
a new affiliate club on the CSUS campus.

They have completed an interest survey, worked through the steps to make our AAUW Student
club official again, and organized a launch meeting, Women Talk Money, in early May. We
wish them great success!

Membership Happenings

Membership Happenings By Gloria Yost and Vicky Lovell

Strengthening our AAUW Sacramento connections and friendships

April is here!  The time to enjoy our longer days before the summer heat and get ready for the school parties, graduations, and holidays ahead.  It’s also the time for most of us to renew our AAUW memberships.  Let’s shoot for the stars with a 100 percent renewal rate!!!

Vicky, Donna and Gloria are here to help, so reach out if needed.

Meet our New AAUW Sacramento Member!

Our newest member is Valerie Connors. If you meet her at an event or a book group or interest group, let her know what you enjoy and appreciate most about our Branch — after telling them how glad you are they joined.

Winner of our “bring in a new member drawing” in March: Cherril Peabody
Congratulations Cherril!

We think it might be time for a reminder about how we coordinate membership tasks.

               – Vicky  coordinates outreach to new and continuing members.

               – Gloria  manages prospective/new member recruitment activities.

All of you, branch members, are a part of our committee in that it takes the efforts of all of us as a community to build and maintain a vibrant organization where everyone wants to be involved.

Sacramento Branch Interns!! By Liz Jordan and Gloria Yost

In the March Capital Ideas, we introduced Renee Walters, one of our two CSUS Interns.  Just to review the context, in December of 2023, the Board approved a pilot program of Internship with Professor Lina Rincon at CSUS.  In January, we looked over applications and two young women were hired to work along with Professor Rincon to reestablish an affiliate branch on the CSUS campus.

Alexis Perrott is a Public History major who wants to expand our understanding of US History through research and education.  She grew up in Hanford, CA in the Fresno area, and is a junior at CSUS this year.  Alexis is excited to develop ideas for empowering women and girls and is grateful for the opportunity to sharpen leadership skills through this internship with AAUW Sacramento.  She says, “Mostly I am grateful to be part of something greater than me.”

We are grateful to have Alexis and Renee developing a new AAUW branch on the CSUS campus and raising awareness of AAUW’s mission and opportunities.

Nevada County AAUW Scholarship Gala – April 27, 2024

Bup Greenwood of the Nevada County AAUW has sent an invitation to their April 27th Gala to support Nevada County AAUW’s local scholarship program.  Some of our members hiked with Auburn members who asked for this information.  It should be a fun evening at Karen Hull’s lovely estate in the country north of Auburn.

The invitation <here> gives the information about the event and the web address to purchase tickets online.  Or, just click this link to buy tickets:

Sacramento Branch Interns!! By Liz Jordan and Gloria Yost

In December of 2023, the Board approved a pilot program of Internship with Professor Alina Rincon at CSUS.  In January, we looked over applications and two young women were hired to work along with Professor Rincon to reestablish an affiliate branch on the CSUS campus.

This month we want to introduce you to one of the interns, Renee Walters, who plans to complete a BA degree in Sociology at the end of this Spring Semester 2024.  Renee added a Minor emphasis on Non-Profit Management and Hospitality and Tourism.  Renee is from the inland Empire Region of California and is hoping to secure employment post-graduation in a position using her skills in event planning, volunteer management, philanthropy and/or non-profit.  Sounds like she fits right into AAUW and our goal to bring back our mission to empower women and girls to Cal State Sacramento!

From the IBC Fund Luncheon

Last month we highlighted one of our speakers, Krystal Lau. Here are photos, courtesy of Donna Holmes, of our other speakers: Joyce Weaver, Stephanie DeGraff-Hunt, and Tracy Ramondini. And, of course, our members listening to these wonderful speakers!

Strengthening our AAUW Sacramento connections and friendships

Fellow active members, WE NEED YOUR HELP!
Do you know that only about half of our members read Capital Ideas?
Even fewer read the e-Blasts!
How can they participate when they are so uninformed?

Please help us increase member participation by checking on your AAUW friends.  Help them add AAUW Sacramento to their contact lists so it doesn’t end up in spam or worse

  • Our newsletter, Capital Ideas, arrives near the end of each month. Did your fellow members open and read it?
  • Look for Eblasts, usually sent out on Monday or Wednesday, that provide details about our upcoming branch events and how to sign up to attend. Do your friends read them?
  • Finally, if they accidentally unsubscribed to AAUW Sacramento, or are having computer troubles, PLEASE LET US KNOW SO WE CAN HELP.

Meet our New AAUW Sacramento Members!

We now have 18 new members who have joined this year so far.  If you meet them at an event or a book group or interest group, let them know what you enjoy and appreciate most about our branch — after telling them how glad you are they joined.  Our three newest members are:

Starting in February, AAUW members will select their favorite entries via ranked-choice voting. The winners will be featured on a collection of notecards sent to all members this spring. The back of each card will include the winning artist’s biography, a fact about AAUW and a highlight of the artist’s local branch affiliation when applicable.

Strengthening our AAUW Sacramento connections and friendships

As we wrap up 2023 and turn toward a new year, it’s a good time think about how AAUW Sacramento can contribute even more to your life, and how you can contribute more to the branch.  Would you like to try a new interest group this year?  Do you have a friend who would like to join a book group you’re enjoying?  We’ve already hosted several excellent events this fall – are you keeping up to date on which you’d like to attend?  There are so many opportunities to learn and enjoy the company of other members.

Our Membership Ambassadors

Our Membership Ambassador ranks grew by two this month.  Marjorie Wade and Monique Stovall each brought guests to the December Winter Luncheon.

Winner of our “bring in a new member drawing” in December:  Marlys Huez

Congratulations Marlys!  Please be sure Gloria Yost knows when you bring a guest and potential member to a meeting so you can get your name on the wall of recognition.

Meet our New AAUW Sacramento Member!

Please join the membership team in welcoming our new member who joined in December.

Hopefully you’ll have a chance to get to know her at a branch event, or an interest group or book group meeting:  Kathryn Rutledge

Ordering AAUW Name Badges By Nancy McCabe

You probably have seen some of our members wearing AAUW badges with our branch inscribed. We ordered them about six years ago when we were using paper badges on a string around our necks. It reminded some of a work badge or a nametag for a cocker spaniel. Ten dollars looked like a bargain for a bit of self esteem. Strangely, the badges are still $10 and can be ordered at aauw.source4.com, then choose Accessorize. My second line is ‘Sacramento Branch, Inc.’ We chose not to add our leadership position name as we often change jobs within our branch. After all, $10 is $10! When we ordered the badges earlier, they added ’empowering women since 1881′ but I gather they are no longer doing that. Anyway, the badges are pretty cool, so feel free to order yours, and shop the site for other logo stuff!

President’s Message

President’s Message By Nancy McCabe

Last month we talked about women who have given a significant amount of time to maintaining the presidency of our branch. This month we need to talk about what help is needed to keep the branch running.

When you get involved, besides knowing that you are a part of the leadership team, you will get to know other active members who just could become your great friends. Look at our current vacancies and see where you fit in!

Lisa Howard, the chair of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, needs help putting together the March meeting, which will use the AAUW implicit bias tool kit.

Charmen Goehring would like members to become familiar with the California School Board Project, which is a part of our Public Policy committee. The San Juan school board was just flipped to extremists so we need to monitor what and where this is happening. We also need a public policy chair to report on bills before the state government that our state lobbyist is following. You would also attend an alternate-month Zoom meeting and write articles for this newsletter informing us of issues we might want to follow.

If you are interested in helping high school girls plan for a career in government, we could use help in contacting schools to recruit girls. We have a state Gov Trek representative in our branch who could show how this is done. Contact Kathy Papst for any of these areas of focus.

The Speech Trek committee needs another member or two to shadow Ann and Shari as they conduct their November informational speech contest workshops (about one hour each) so that you can learn to conduct some of these meetings yourselves. You would need to be available a few weekdays by mid to late November. Where are our former English and/or speech teachers? Contact Kathleen Deaver if you would like to get involved.

Karen Burley could use some help getting the newsletter out and can show someone the ropes. Some comfort level with technology/computer applications such as Microsoft Word is needed.

It takes a lot of hands to accomplish our goals, and we would like to have your time and talents to help accomplish our goal of advancing gender equity for women and girls! Be in touch! All of the contact people are in the directory.

SEE YOU AT THE HOLIDAY PARTY!
