Strategic Planning and Call for Volunteers

Strategic Planning at Work

On May 20 at 11 a.m., we installed our new president and vice presidents of programming, heard from this year’s Speech Trek winner, and recognized our branch’s named-gift honorees and new 50-year members. We also voted on updates to our branch’s bylaws. More information on these topics can be found elsewhere in the newsletter.

Marty McKnew and Hedda Smithson, two of our strategic planning committee members, substantially revised the bylaws by eliminating duplicate sections and adding new verbiage for our new at-large director positions. Click the link below to read the clean copy of the bylaws.

Contact Marty at martymcknew@comcast.net to see the marked-up copy of the bylaws.

President’s Message

President’s Message By Angela Scarlett

As you all know, the nominating committee could not find a replacement for me last year, resulting in my serving a third year as branch president. We also tried to find a replacement for our programs director. We will hold an official election during the April Authors Luncheon that we share with CHAR.

For this upcoming year, Nancy McCabe, who previously served as president six years ago, has agreed to step back in as president. After her presidency, she took over as the Sunshine coordinator from Jane Cooley. Since Nancy just had knee replacement surgery, this is a brave move on her part. She knows the branch is in need, and we are very grateful for her presence. If you have received a birthday card or condolence card this year, Nancy sent it.

For the newly renamed vice-president of programs, Hedda Smithson and Barbara Smith have both agreed to serve in this position. This position is critical for having meaningful and engaging mission-critical AAUW Sacramento branch meetings and building community and friendship.

Hedda and Barbara are also former branch presidents who have diligently volunteered for years. They will seek to expand the pool of volunteers who can help plan events for our monthly programs.

Thank you, Nancy, Hedda, and Barbara, for your service!

President’s Message

President’s Message By Angela Scarlett

Dear fellow AAUW Members,

I sit here on a Tuesday night, trying to capture how lovely our meeting was on Sept. 17! Members such as Barbara Smith, Kathy Schrumpf, Jane Cooley and Barbara Smith brought snacks and helped set up the room. Sandi Schoenman greeted folks at the door.

Kamariah Alexander

One of our scholarship recipients, Kamariah Alexander, spoke movingly

Marissa Floyd

about returning to college after becoming a mom. In contrast, our NCWSSL winner, Marissa Floyd, spoke about the diverse offerings of leadership training she could access at NCWSSL.

Our guest speakers, Jay Cohen and Maiya De La Rosa, both from Planned Parenthood Mar Monte, spoke to the challenges for women and pregnant persons in a post-Dobbs world. They framed the policy opportunities in

Planned Parenthood

California and the practical matter of providing reproductive health care to hundreds of thousands of low-income people.

It warmed my heart to see many of our members present and engaged with issues that impact our mission. I want to see more folks engaged as this year rolls along. To this end, I am setting up a Phonevite account. What’s a Phonevite account? Well, it’s a handy low-cost tool that sends our robocall reminders to members’ phones to remind them of upcoming events. AAUW California suggested this as an option for doing outreach with members who don’t use email very often. Please reach out to me if you have thoughts about this platform.

I hope to see everyone online for our October program, the CA Ballot Forum!

Cheers,
Angela
