Membership Matters

Membership Matters By Donna Holmes and Marty McKnew

We are saddened to announce the passing of two members of Sacramento AAUW, Tina Taggart and Marjorie Daughhetee.

Tina, a 50-year member of AAUW, was born in 1933 and passed away on Aug. 30, 2021.  She was a native of Sacramento and spent most of her life here.  With a BS in journalism from the University of Oregon, she became a kindergarten teacher, a stay-at-home mom and finally an information officer at the Department of Food and Agriculture. She was also a 50-year member of the Delta Zeta and the Tuesday Club.  She is greatly missed by her husband, three children, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Marjorie joined AAUW in 2015 and was active with Book Section No. 2 and, more recently, with the Games Night.  Marjorie passed away a few days before the AAUW holiday party, which she planned to attend.  She came to California from Nebraska to teach home economics at Placerville High School.  She met her husband, Larry, in a summer graduate program.   Marjorie and her husband were seasoned travelers, touring all over the world and across the US until Larry’s death a few years ago.  She leaves one son in Ithaca, NY, and numerous nieces and nephews.

(Thank you to Alice Bauer for the biographical information.)

Membership – December Update

Membership – December Update By Donna Holmes and Marty McKnew

One-third of our membership participated in our all-inclusive Holiday Party in December!  This was our first in-person event since February 2020 and it was lovely.

Members are the branch and together we change the world.  Membership directors are automatically on the Program Committee plus other non-board members who volunteer.  With Kim Rutledge’s leadership, we work out a plan for the year and who will work on each program.

At our December program we try to support another group in need, and this year we chose the Afghani refugees served by the Highlands Community Charter School.  We also learned about other cultures and their holiday observances.

The program team was made up of Bonnie Penix, Shari Beck, Gloria Yost, Barbara Smith, Jan Stuter, Kim Rutledge and Donna Holmes, with technical support by Karen Burley.  In total, 68 members made this event a rousing success.  The photo shows gifts collected at the holiday luncheon that made more than 100 children very happy.  Remember, membership is all of us — no one has to carry the whole load.  When you can, volunteer, take a chance to join a committee, interest group or even the board.  Together we are advancing gender equity for women and girls through research, education and advocacy.

Join us on Jan. 29 at the IBC Zoom meeting to hear from three fellows who received part of the $5M given out by Association this past year.

Happy New Year!

Sue Bordner’s Passing

Sue Bordner’s Passing – Obituary

[Editor’s Note: Sue Bordner was a branch member and past AAUW California president. This obituary was published in the Sacramento Bee.]

Sue Bordner

Susan Elizabeth Wellington Bordner, born December 23,1939 in San Francisco, CA, to James Frederick Wellington and Caroline Wardner Harrison Wellington of Berkeley, CA passed away on November 15th, 2021 at 81 years of age.

Raised in Berkeley and Kensington, CA, Sue, as she was called, attended Kensington Elementary School, Portola Junior High School, was an active Girl Scout and Senior Girl Scout Mariner, and graduated in 1957 from The Anna Head School in Berkeley. She attended Pomona College for one year where she met her husband of 61 years Dalton William Bordner. She transferred to UC Berkeley where she became a member of Phi Mu Sorority and then to UCLA, after marriage, graduating with a BA in Political Science in 1961. She and husband Dalt moved to Fullerton, CA in 1963 where they raised three sons: Robert, Douglas and Bruce. All their sons achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in the BSA.

Sue was a lifelong volunteer in the communities where she lived. She served on PTA boards of schools her sons attended and on the Fullerton PTA Council, and on boards of the North Orange County YWCA and the League of Women Voters. She served on the City of Fullerton Planning Commission 1977-81 and was recognized for her service on the Orange County Transportation Commission’s Special 20 Year Master Plan Citizen’s Committee in 1989.

She was a 50-year Honorary Life Member of the American Association of University Women, serving as the Fullerton Branch President in 1985-86, as Director of Public Policy for the California State AAUW 1990-92, as the State AAUW President 1994-96, and in other state level board positions. Women In Action Lobby Day (WIALD) was developed while she was Director of Public Policy. In 1994, the Bordners relocated to El Dorado Hills in Northern California and Sue joined both the Sacramento and Foothills of El Dorado County branches of AAUW.

Sue was introduced to Japanese flower arranging (ikebana) in 1986 while her husband was working in Singapore for Ameron PTE. When they returned to California in 1987, she began taking lessons in the Ikenobo School of Ikebana and in 1990 in the Sogetsu School under the direction of sensei Kimi Kika Shibata in Sacramento.  She attained the Fourth Grade teaching certificate. She served on the board of the Sacramento Chapter #26 of Ikebana International for many years, including time as bylaws chair, newsletter editor, and president. She displayed and demonstrated at Sogetsu and Ikebana International events, at the Bloom 1 & 2 shows in Davis, CA. She was a member of the Sacramento Floral Design Guild also.

In 2019 Sue and Dalt relocated to South Orange County to the active retirement community of Reata Glen in Rancho Mission Viejo, CA where she died. Cause of death was cancer.

Sue is survived by her husband Dalton William Bordner; sons Robert (Susan) of Seattle, WA, Douglas (Jennifer) of Simi Valley, CA, and Bruce (Christine) of Riverside, CA; Grandsons Nicholas, Austin, Travis and Ryan; Granddaughters Caroline, Samantha, Tara, and Addison; and Step-Grands Mitchell and Kate Duran. She is also survived by her brother, James “Jim” (Cheryl) of Davis, CA and several cousins.

Plans for a Celebration of Life will be announced at a future time. McAulay and Wallace Mortuary of Fullerton is handling arrangements for the family.

[If you’d like to donate to the American Fellowship in Sue’s name, send your check made out to AAUW, with American Fellowship in the memo line, to Treasurer Liz Jordan, who will make sure it gets to where it needs to go. Liz’s contact information can be found in the Membership Directory.]

Membership: Did You Know? By Donna Holmes and Marty McKnew

Prospective members who join at a branch meeting get a 50 percent discount on National dues!  When you bring a prospective member to an AAUW event, their first year of membership is $71, instead of $102.

Know any prospective members?  Invite them to our next event. This discount applies if they join within two weeks of the event. For example, if you invite a prospective member to participate at the Nov.18 Zoom meeting, they get the discount if they join by Dec. 2. Or if you bring them to the Holiday Party on Dec. 11, they have until Dec. 25 to join. To activate this discount, please contact your membership co-director Marty McKnew. Marty’s contact information can be found in the branch Membership Directory.

Breaking News: For the 2021-22 year, the Sacramento AAUW Branch has retained more than 90 percent of all members from the 2020-21 year, thus contributing to our first “Star” in the National 5 Star program. Well done!

Membership, Fellowship Themes of October Branch Ice Cream Social

Membership, Fellowship Themes of October Branch Ice Cream Social By Kim Rutledge

The AAUW Sacramento Branch Program Committee is busy finalizing details for our first in-person program since early 2020. We will gather on Saturday, Oct. 23 at 12:30 p.m. at Eastern Oak Park, 3127 Eastern Ave., Sacramento, to reunite as a branch over ice cream from the Made in the Shade ice cream truck. Each branch member is encouraged to bring a potential new member. Every member who brings a guest will be entered into a raffle to win a fabulously cheesy prize.

We ask that all members contribute $8 to cover ice cream truck and rental fees. The $8 registration fee, payable by check to AAUW Sacramento, may be mailed to Cathy Locke (Cathy’s address can be found in the Membership Directory) or paid via the registration link on Eventbrite. Note that Eventbrite payment adds an additional fee of $1.42, for a total charge of $9.42. You can find the registration on Eventbrite here.

The Sacramento branch board voted at its August meeting to require proof of COVID-19 vaccination for all in-person events during the 2021-22 program year. We are committed to the health and safety of all our members and plan to offer a mix of in-person and Zoom events in the coming year. If you are attending an in-person event, including the October ice cream social, please bring your photo ID and either your COVID-19 vaccination card or digital proof of vaccination. To download digital proof of vaccination to your cell phone, go to https://myvaccinerecord.cdph.ca.gov. The board also voted to follow current local and state guidance around masks. Because the October event will be held outdoors, we encourage attendees to wear masks, but they will not be required.

The Program Committee looks forward to reuniting with our members on Oct. 23 and appreciates everyone’s ongoing participation during these unusual times.
